A fabric name is only the beginning of a good clothing specification. Two garments labelled “100% cotton” can feel and perform very differently because yarn, construction, weight and finishing also matter. For a brand developing a collection, the useful question is: what does this fabric need to do in the finished garment?

Start with the fiber family

Family Common examples What to consider
Natural plant fibers Cotton, linen Hand feel, creasing, dimensional stability and intended care.
Natural animal fibers Silk, wool Drape, warmth, skin comfort and care requirements.
Regenerated cellulosic fibers Viscose, modal, lyocell Softness, moisture absorption, wet handling and the performance of the actual construction.
Synthetic fibers Polyester, nylon, elastane Strength, drying behavior, heat sensitivity, stretch and recovery.

Match characteristics to the garment

Cotton is often chosen for its familiar, comfortable handle and moisture absorption. Linen offers a distinctive texture and a crisp appearance, with creasing often part of its character. Silk can bring luster and fluid drape. Wool can provide warmth and resilience, although next-to-skin comfort depends on the fiber and fabric.

Polyester and nylon are useful in many durable, easy-care and performance constructions. They should not automatically be described as “unbreathable”: air permeability and moisture management also depend on yarn, fabric structure and finishing. Elastane is commonly blended in small amounts to add stretch, but its percentage alone does not tell you how well a garment will recover its shape.

Why blends deserve a sample

A blend can balance handle, strength, stretch or care. It does not automatically combine every benefit of its ingredients. Compare the blend in the correct weight and construction, then check it after the agreed wash procedure. An attractive swatch may drape differently when made into a full garment.

Turn your preference into a brief

If you have a reference garment, tell us what you like about it—its smooth surface, substantial feel or softer drape. That gives the sampling discussion a clearer starting point than “premium fabric” alone.
